Machine-tool ( traditional) treading is, probably, familiar to all the specialists. Nevertheless, in our practice in tool selection we often face the situations when not everyone and not always apply optimal solutions.
Way № 1 – thread cutting with the help of a tap :
This is, probably, the most widely used way of thread cutting in the bores from 1 to 12 (30) mm.
Tap screws with a spiral groove for blind bores is a separate issue, the progress of the world engineering.

with preliminary preparation of work taps by drilling or punching and stamping.
Up to 100 000 knurled bores with 1 chip-free tap in steel is an ordinary result while applying a coolant and different regimes of cutting.
The cost of a flowtap or a chip-free tap of high quality is in 3-4 times higher than that of a standard one
Way № 2 – thread cutting with the help of the cutters with inserts or blazed plates:
There is a limit on the minimal size of the bore due to the size of cutters and the equipment.
Way № 3 - thread-mills:
Thread-milling is an appealing alternative to thread cutting with the help of taps and has the advantages of orbital milling.
Actually, one thread-mill can cut threads ranging from M2 to M16 and more, of course if the depth of outlet and the equipment capacity permit.
Another advantage of thread-mills is the ability to regrind the tool up to 3 times, in contrast with taps. And if there is an opportunity for subsequent covering, the long-lasting effect and the quantity of the threading justifies the given method to the full extent.
Way № 4 – Universal instruments
